Edgar Allan Poe & Life Science

English 1102: Poe & Science

Welcome to our Georgia Tech English 1102: Poe & Science website! During this semester, our English 1102 class explored the writings of Poe and how he, as an artist, represents Science. Poe incorporates several imaginative and innovative ideas into his writing, which has set the stage scientific exploration that is seen today. Poe includes different scientific studies in his stories such as medicine, phrenology, life cycles, and evolution. In our class, we dissected Poe's stories, poems, and essays and connected them to the types of life sciences we explored over the course of the class. For questions, please contact [email protected]. Hope you enjoy!

Sonnet - To Science

Science! true daughter of Old Time thou art!
Who alterest all things with thy peering eyes.
Why preyest thou thus upon the poet's heart,
Vulture, whose wings are dull realities?
How should he love thee? or how deem thee wise?
Who wouldst not leave him in his wandering
To seek for treasure in the jewelled skies,
Albeit he soared with an undaunted wing?
Hast thou not dragged Diana from her car?
And driven the Hamadryad from the wood
To seek a shelter in some happier star?
Hast thou not torn the Naiad from her flood,
The Elfin from the green grass, and from me
The summer dream beneath the tamarind tree?
